Description of each part of ginseng
Korean ginseng root is composed of head, primary, lateral roots and fine roots.
A body of a mature ginseng has well balance roots and look like a human body.
The shape of Korean ginseng constantly changes during its growth phase.
The roots of ginseng passes through about 17 months of growing period (4~6 months)
and cultivation period (7~9 months) during the first year after sowing. In the second year,
seedling ginseng’s root will be removed and lateral roots will start
growing when it is replanted again. Basic shape of the primary and lateral
roots are formed in the third year and during the fourth and fifth year,
the main roots become bulky while the growth of lateral and fine roots become
faster and the shape characteristic of Korean ginseng is formed.
The 6 year old ginseng that is use for red ginseng processed products has sturdy
head and body length that reaches 7~10cm with several lateral roots.
Overall length of the ginseng root is about 34cm and weight about 40~120g.
